The university runs the following department listed below in programs related to environment and climate change.
Department of Geology: This department host programs in the field of paleoclimate, environmental geology, paleoenvironmental studies, natural and anthropogenic risk, and volcanology at the masters and PhD level. Staff of the department with the research group of sedimentology and volcanology/risk pursue research in assessing sediments/soil pollution, climatic reconstruction and estimation of carbon stockage in soil, climatic variations, risk related to volcanic activities, landslide, flooding and lahar.
b. Department of Environmental Sciences: This department host programs in the field of waste management, pollution control, climate change, disaster risk management and environment health and environmental monitoring. Staff of the department are equipped with knowledge in both theoretical and practical field. Most of the staffs have affiliations with public and private institutions, which will host students for internships.
c. Department of Electrical Engineering: The department which is hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) runs a postgraduate program (masters and PhD) with objectives to provides the African youths at the end of their studies the followings; (1) Gain a deep practical understanding of specialized topics in renewable energy sources and generation;
energy storage systems; energy transmission and distribution, including smart grids and micro grids; and the main drivers and policies that impact the adoption of clean energy, (2) Demonstrate a technical and economic understanding of renewable energy resource assessment and determine how different renewable technologies fit into the current and future energy market, (3) Articulate the research and technology pathways for current and future energy provision, (4) Undertake engineering system design of renewable energy generation, distribution and storage for various operation modes (5) Identify and evaluate emerging technologies in renewable energy generation, integration, distribution and storage, (6) Execute engineering design tasks in multidisciplinary teams to industry standards.
